A friend of mine once lived on one side of a duplex. On the other side lived a young man who murdered someone. As it turns out this was not the first time. The shooter and his girlfriend attempted to conceal the murder, but were apprehended. I couldn't help but remember being haunted by people I'd briefly encountered in life who were also consumed by their urges, and by what I imagined must have be righteous indignation about the choices they made in life.
lyrics
The first night that I saw my woman
The pupils of her eyes were dark and wide
I swear to you I saw my face reflected in my lady's eyes
You could not conceive this road I've traveled
You would not believe this thing I've done
To hell and back I made my way escorted by a loaded gun
And it's gonna be a long night, baby
A cold and a dark night, baby
If you need someone to cling to, baby
Cling to me
Cling to me
We left a man in the clothes his maker gave him
Baptized him where the water meets the sun
And when they dragged my girl away
I knew the time had come to run
As good as it must feel to stand in judgement
As sane as it must seem to turn your head
I'd bet my last penny on
You'd do the same if dealt my hand
And it's gonna be a long night, baby
A cold and a dark night, baby
If you need someone to cling to, baby
Cling to me
Cling to me
